Today, I'd like to share a highly useful feature for on-site debugging: the 615 debugging mode (the same principle also applies to devices such as the 620,630, and 640).

In industrial automation and power systems, the stability and reliability of equipment are of paramount importance. As a high-performance relay protection device, the REF615 incorporates a commissioning mode to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the system during actual operation. Today, we provide a detailed overview of the primary functions of the commissioning mode, its activation procedure, and its role in system testing.

I. Introduction to Debugging Mode

Debug mode is a core function of the protection relay REF615; it is primarily used to simulate discrete output signals and trigger the operation of the protection module.

Analog discrete output

Debug mode can simulate the various switch states that may occur during actual equipment operation, thereby helping engineers verify whether the digital output signals are accurate, whether the circuit paths are unobstructed, and ensuring that the status of each port is correctly transmitted to the main control system.

Protection Module Operation Test

Through debug mode, the protection function can be triggered artificially to simulate abnormal conditions such as overloads and short circuits, thereby verifying the accuracy and response speed of the protection logic. This plays a critical role in confirming whether the protection module can operate promptly and reliably under emergency conditions.

II. How to Enable Debug Mode

To facilitate system debugging for users, the REF615 provides an intuitive debugging mode operating procedure; the specific steps are as follows:

1. Enter the main menu

After starting the device, first locate "Debug" in the main menu.

2. Device Selection Testing

After entering the Debugging options, select "Device Test."

3. Select the input test mode

In the device test menu, click "Enter Test Mode"; then, follow the familiar procedure to exit and save. When the operation indicator lights up, the switch has been completed successfully. (Internal faults are intended solely for testing the IRF output and are generally not used.) 4. Test the discrete input and protection functions

In debug mode, the interface displays two options: "Digital Input Testing" and "Functional Testing":

Digital input testing

After selecting this option, you can simulate various input conditions and monitor the response of each digital input port. This primarily involves directly commanding the corresponding output to actuate a function; for example, you can command the circuit associated with a protection trip to close, thereby testing the trip circuit.

Protection Function Testing

After entering the protection test menu, users can select the corresponding protection module (e.g., overcurrent, overvoltage, or short-circuit protection) to verify whether the protection trip is triggered accurately. For more complex functions, such as reclosing or differential protection, users can even select a specific step within the corresponding action—for example, reclosing or differential blocking. Each step is operated via the menu interface, ensuring that users can quickly locate and execute the required test during operation. Through this comprehensive workflow, engineers can systematically verify all equipment functions and reduce potential risks during actual operation.

III. Role of Debugging Mode

The introduction of commissioning mode in the REF615 is not merely for simulation testing; it plays a pivotal role throughout the entire system commissioning and maintenance process:

Verify that the program output is correct

In practical applications, the correctness of program logic directly affects the reliable operation of the protection device. Through debugging mode, field personnel can verify the program's exit points item by item, ensuring that every instruction and response meets the design expectations and thereby preventing safety incidents caused by program errors.

Detect wiring abnormalities

In power systems, wiring errors or loose connections can prevent equipment from operating properly. The commissioning mode provides real-time monitoring and detection capabilities, enabling engineers to quickly identify wiring issues and ensure that all connections meet technical requirements.

Improve maintenance efficiency

Regularly using debug mode for self-diagnosis can identify potential system issues in advance, providing strong support for routine maintenance. Promptly identifying and resolving these issues can effectively extend equipment lifespan, reduce maintenance costs, and ensure the system's long-term stable operation.

Simplify the troubleshooting process

When a system malfunction occurs, the debugging mode enables rapid simulation of fault scenarios and reproduction of the problem's occurrence, helping engineers more accurately identify the root cause and thereby quickly restore the system to normal operation. With its comprehensive simulation and testing of digital outputs and protection functions, the REF615 debugging mode provides a solid guarantee for the reliable operation of power systems. Whether during the commissioning and installation of a new system, routine maintenance, or fault diagnosis, the debugging mode plays an irreplaceable and critical role.
